Maria Mori Brooks, PhD, co-director of the Epidemiology Data Center, was an invited speaker at the inaugural Women in Data Science Conference (WiDS) Pittsburgh @CMU on March 9, 2018.

Dr. Brooks gave a technical vision talk entitled “Different Tools for Different Purposes: The Role of Well-designed Cohort Studies and Clinical Trials.”  The presentation highlighted several studies conducted at the Epidemiology Data Center including the Study of Women’s Health Across the Nation (SWAN) and the Bypass Angioplasty Revascularization Investigation (BARI).

WiDS began at Stanford University in California in 2015 and now includes over 80 satellite conferences around the world.  The conferences are intended to inspire and educate data scientists regardless of gender.  All of the speakers are women representing academia and industry.  In 2018, the WiDS conference was held in Pittsburgh for the first time and was hosted by Carnegie Mellon University.
