EDC faculty member Balasubramani Goundappa co-authored a study published in Brain, Behavior, & Immunity – Health linked to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals 3: Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages (UN SDGs)

Hospitalization due to acute respiratory illnesses, such as influenza, can result in mental and physical health declines.  Patients hospitalized for acute respiratory illness were divided into three functional groups based on the SF-12, using cluster analysis. At enrollment, the lowest functioning group more frequently reported body aches and confusion and lower pre-illness physical function than the high functioning group. However, at about 5 weeks later, the highest functioning group reported significant decrements in overall physical health and mental health functioning compared with the lowest functioning group. Thus, adults at all levels of physical and mental health functioning are affected by respiratory illnesses such as influenza. This research was linked to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals 3: Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages (UN SDGs), to address global challenges. The primary results were published in Brain, Behavior and Immunity Health.
