Histoplasmosis is an environmentally acquired fungal disease caused by Histoplasma species. Together with a team of researchers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and various state health departments, EDC PhD student Kristina Boyd analyzed county-level histoplasmosis incidence from 8 US states reporting histoplasmosis to public health authorities. Boyd was one of the primary architects of the analysis strategy, which involved constructing generalized linear mixed hurdle models. The paper found histoplasmosis incidence was higher in counties with limited healthcare infrastructure and access as measured by the Minority Health Social Vulnerability Index and in more rural counties.
